PRESS STUDIES RESEARCH TEAM

The research tasks of the team will be carried out in several areas, in line with the tradition of the discipline, the team’s potential, and the needs of contemporary knowledge about the press and teaching. On the one hand, existing gaps should be identified and addressed in a coordinated and systematic way; on the other, the team should respond actively to contemporary issues.

The main segments of press studies research will focus on historical press studies, bibliographic research, and press historiography.

The first research area will cover the history of the Polish press from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, with particular emphasis on the history of the Kraków press. Despite the extensive scholarly literature in this field, research into the periodical press of this period still requires comprehensive and in-depth source studies, as well as monographic and synthetic approaches. This applies especially to the Kraków press, the study of which should become a distinctive area of our institution. It should be emphasised that the press contains materials of particular importance for various disciplines in the humanities.

The specific topics to be addressed in our research include:

  • The Kraków press as a source for research on urban life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as a source of knowledge about the history of the city and the region.
  • The bibliography of the Kraków press from 1918 to 1939. These activities will constitute preliminary findings and a starting point for synthetic research, the final outcome of which may be a monograph on the Kraków press of the interwar period.
  • The bibliography of pedagogical press published in Poland between 1945 and 1989.
  • The history of popular science periodicals in Poland.
  • Issues related to the contemporary press, including pedagogical, scholarly, children’s, and young adult press.
  • In addition to the planned research, other forms of activity may be developed, including the organisation of regular academic meetings, seminars, and lectures for various communities.
