RESEARCH TEAM ON AI AND ALGORITHMIC CULTURE

The Research Team on AI and Algorithmic Culture, operating within the Media Studies Centre, conducts interdisciplinary research into the social, cultural, cognitive, and educational consequences of artificial intelligence development in the context of an algorithmic society. The team’s primary focus is on analysing processes through which artificial intelligence systems and algorithms are becoming integral components of the cognitive, communicative, and cultural infrastructure of contemporary societies.

The Team adopts the premise that the development of generative artificial intelligence represents not merely a technological change, but a profound transformation of social practices, including the ways in which knowledge is produced, information is selected, attention is organised, and decisions are made. From this perspective, AI is understood not only as a tool, but also as a cultural environment, a non-human social actor, and a mediator of cognitive and communicative relations.

A key area of the Team’s research is the concept of algorithmic culture, according to which algorithms and AI systems co-organise individuals’ everyday practices and structure processes of visibility, communication, and knowledge distribution. In this context, the Team examines the platformisation of social life, datafication, the automation of cognitive processes, and the growing delegation of cognitive functions to AI systems.

An important pillar of the Team’s research is the perspective of extended cognition and cognitive outsourcing, encompassing an analysis of transformations in the human–technology relationship, including the extent to which AI systems assume functions related to memory, analysis, creativity, and decision-making. The Team investigates the consequences of these processes for cognitive autonomy, critical thinking, reflexivity, and users’ epistemic competencies.

Another key area of the Team’s work is the analysis of the relational dimension of human–AI interaction. The research addresses the emotional, social, and identity-related aspects of using artificial intelligence systems, including the processes of technology anthropomorphism, levels of trust in AI, emotional attachment to AI systems, and the redefinition of responsibility within human–algorithm relationships.

The Team also develops research on AI competencies, approached from a humanistic perspective as a set of social, cognitive, critical, and ethical competencies that extend beyond purely technical skills. Particular importance is attached to non-digital competencies, which are understood as fundamental to individuals’ autonomous and reflective functioning within algorithmic environments. Another important dimension of the Team’s research concerns the educational and cultural consequences of AI development, including transformations in learning processes, the changing role of media education, and emerging models of participation in digital culture. The Team investigates how AI systems affect educational practices and what competencies are necessary for the responsible and critical use of these technologies. The Team’s research is interdisciplinary, integrating perspectives from media studies, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and communication studies. Its research employs both quantitative methods, including panel models, regression analyses, and comparative studies, and qualitative approaches, such as discourse analysis, digital ethnography, and the analysis of user practices. The Team’s overarching aim is to develop an integrative, humanistic model for analysing artificial intelligence in contemporary culture, enabling a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying algorithmic society and the consequences of AI development for individual autonomy, social practices, and structures of knowledge.
